Uninterruptible power supply and safe operation of the boiler
Do you want to use your boiler safely? Then be sure to read the material to the end.
You are using or planning to install a solid fuel boiler. In most modern boilers, the combustion process is regulated by a control unit and a turbine, and the circulation pump pumps the coolant in the heating system. For their operation, they require power supply from the 220V network. When the voltage in the sockets disappears, the circulation pump stops working, which can lead to boiling water in the boiler, which in turn can damage the entire heating system. And it's winter outside!
To prevent an accident, you need to provide the circulation pump and boiler automation with backup power. This problem can be solved by installing an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
UPS is an electronic device that monitors changes in the mains voltage and turns on the emergency power supply circuit from the battery(s) in case of a mains voltage loss of 220V, or if the mains voltage goes beyond the permissible limits. When the voltage stabilizes, it switches the power to the mains and at the same time recharges the battery. Unlike computer UPS, UPS for the boiler does not have a built-in battery; the battery capacity is selected in each case individually — depending on the electrical power consumption of all elements of the boiler (circulation pump, automation, blower fan, etc.), and on the time during which it is necessary to maintain the boiler offline.
Thus, when choosing a UPS for the boiler and a battery for it, you need to know the answers to the following questions:
How much electrical power does your boiler electronics consume?
The power consumption range of Altep boilers is 120 - 350 W per hour (excluding the power consumption of the circulation pump, which must be added). This information can be found in the technical documentation for the boiler. The power of the UPS depends on the value of this parameter, which is selected with a margin (desirably 30%). The electrical power consumption can be found in the boiler technical documentation.
How long should the boiler work in autonomous mode?
The battery life is determined by the capacity of the battery connected to the UPS: the larger the battery capacity, the longer it will work. But there are restrictions imposed by the technical characteristics of the uninterruptible power supply itself: if the passport of the UPS indicates a maximum battery capacity of 100 Ah, this means that it simply cannot charge a large capacity battery.
When choosing a UPS for a heating boiler, you should pay attention to several important parameters:
